Animal Welfare

The RSPCA was the world's first animal welfare society. In 1822 a group of Christians led by William Wilberforce had introduced a Bill into Parliament, 'To Prevent the Cruel and Improper Treatment of Cattle'. Two years later Arthur Broome, a London vicar, called a meeting at which the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed. The Society recorded that its principles were based on the Christian faith. In 1840 Queen Victoria added her Royal patronage. The Bible states that 'a righteous man cares for the needs of his animal' and Christians are still involved in many organisations campaigning to prevent the unnecessary suffering of animals.
