Introduction Within 200 years of his birth, it is likely that the message of Jesus Christ was already known in parts of this remote composed of the Roman Empire. The Romans called it 'Britannia'. No one knows exactly how Christianity first came to these islands, but after the 5th century the number and influence of Christians was increased by the preaching of Patrick to the Irish, Columba to the tribes of Scotland, Illtud to the Welsh, and Aidan and Augustine to the people of northern and southern England. Their message was the 'gospel' - which means 'good news'. It was the news of God coming to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. They taught that he died and rose again so that all who trust him can find forgiveness and friendship with God. They also called for a lifestyle of obedience to the teaching of the Bible. Sadly, not everything that has been done since then in the name of Christianity has been right. However, the lasting influence of true Christians on our society gives us good cause to celebrate.
