Mary JonesMary Jones was born into a poor family in the small Welsh village of Llanfihangel in 1784. In a neighbouring village the Rev. Thomas Charles opened one of his many schools for poor children and Mary became a pupil. Once she could read she longed to have a Bible of her own and saved hard until she had enough money. Mary then walked across the hills to Bala in order to buy a copy from Thomas Charles.
Shortly afterwards Thomas Charles, who had long been concerned about the lack of Bibles for Wales, told a meeting in London that he knew of girls in London that he knew of girls who walked up to thirty miles ‘to obtain a copy of the precious Scriptures’. That meeting decided to help not just Wales but the world, and in 1804 the British and Foreign Bible Society was formed. Today the Bible Society, working in 180 countries spends more than ten million pounds a year sending Bibles all over the world. The story of Mary Jones has been translated into forty languages.
