MusicChristian themes have been celebrated in music throughout the centuries by composes such as Thomas Tallis, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst and more recently John Tavener. Handel, who wrote the Messiah, made his home in England and many of his oratorios follow Christian themes. Mendelssohn gained his reputation in Britain and Elijah was written for the Birmingham Festival in 1846.
The Bible has been the inspiration for contemporary musicals like the popular Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Some of the most important works of literature are Christian hymns. The evidence of this is the five million people who watch ‘Songs of Praise’ each week!
Charles Wesley, brother of the founder of the Methodist Church, wrote more than seven thousand hymns! Others have produced hymns that are sung across the world, like Amazing Grace by John Newton, the converted slave-trader, and There is a green hill far away by Cecil Francis Alexander.
